Book Launch : Baking with Jackie Cameron

It is not every day that you get invited to a book launch and what a privilege it is to listen to the author thank those people who made their book a reality. Often it takes a lot of sweat, tears and even blood to produce a book. Although in the case of a recipe book I would think it also added a few kilograms as well.

The venue for this book launch was the truly spectacular Jackie Cameron School of Food & Wine situated in cold Hilton which is just above Pietermaritzburg in Kwazulu-Natal.  Jackie Cameron was launching her new book “Baking with Jackie Cameron” which is sure to meet with great success as her first book did (Jackie Cameron Cooks at Home).

Jackie Cameron

What a launch it was! Two large tables groaned with food and all the items were created from the recipes in the book. What I was interested to discover, when Jackie Cameron spoke about the new book, was that the food was made by friends and family members for the launch. One of the recipes was even made by someone who had never baked before!

A fabulous table of eats - Jackie Cameron signing books,

The recipes inside Baking with Jackie Cameron are cherished family recipes that have been given a twist to make them new again eg Granadilla meringue tart and Carrot cake with chocolate. The book covers biscuits, breads, pies, quiches, celebration cakes and desserts.

Tasting is believing and everything I had was so moreish. I especially loved the coffee millionaire (billionaire) slice – oh my! So much so that I didn’t take a photo of it as I was enjoying it too much.

So if you love recipe books (as I do) and creating new baked goods to treat your family, then you must get to your closest book store and buy Baking with Jackie Cameron.

The books retails for R297 at Exclusive Books.

Hill's Transforms Lives - Real Pets Real Stories

Pet parents now have a place where they can brag about their pets and share stories of how nutrition has helped transform their pets’ lives. Hill’s Pet Nutrition created the interactive website, Hill’s Transforming Lives, as part of its unwavering commitment to ground-breaking nutrition and constant innovation.

The website features real pets, real pictures and real stories from pet parents across the country. The home page is a beautiful mosaic of rescue dogs, pampered pooches and fluffy felines. Every pet story and photo added to the website helps complete the picture.

The mosaic is interactive and allows people to search for stories that may touch their heart. They can search for pets in their neighbourhood, pets with specific health conditions or even pets adopted from a favourite shelter.

Hill’s has been at the forefront of veterinary clinical nutrition since the 1930s. The new website shares the story of how Dr. Mark Morris, Sr., developed Hill’s Prescription Diet Canine k/d, the first ever veterinary prepared food for the management of a canine disease, and how he helped save the life of Buddy, the first seeing-eye dog in the US.

Today Hill’s employs more than 220 veterinarians, PhD nutritionists and food scientists to develop therapeutic and wellness foods. The company’s long-term investment in learning, technology and science has helped it develop many industry-leading innovations, including the most extensive range of clinical nutrition products for sick, at-risk and healthy pets.

“Pets have the ability to transform our lives; nutrition has the power to transform theirs.” You can read their amazing testimonials and post your own story on Hill’s Transforming Lives

East Coast Radio House & Garden Show 2016

The ECR House & Garden Show is currently on at the Durban Exhibition Centre. I spent a few hours there on Saturday and Sunday mostly watching the celebrity chef's in action at the Celebrity Chef Kitchen. The chefs kitchen is being hosted and run by Sherwyn Weaich (executive chef / food writer / television host) and he is highly entertaining.

I watched Culinary Artist Wayland Green from Granny Mouse Country House & Spa in the Midlands make delicious spinach gnocchi, Thai fish cakes, chicken croquettes and seafood paella. #yummy

Also showing their culinary skills at the show were Chef Ismail Arbee and Chef Zahira Mohamed. They are the two chefs whose cooking shows will soon be launching on Deen TV. Chef Ismail's show is called What's Cooking and Chef Zahira's show is Simply Desserts. Steak canapes and prawn canapes are a definite speciality of Chef Ismail and they were delicious. Chef Zahira tempted our taste buds with a blueberry panacotta and a white chocolate mousse with a granadilla curd.

My favourite part of the show is always the hall filled with Durban creatives. There is jewellery, leather bags, washi tape and a whole lot more to see and buy. I treated myself to a roll of washi tape and a pack of fabric offcuts.

I also had a good look and drool over the beautiful gas stoves at the Hirsch stand.

There is lots to see and buy at the show and a wide range of food to tempt hungry tummies.
