Sparkle says #FeedMeHillsMeow

It is very hard living in a house with a demanding feline boss! “Give me tuna, give me dry food, accompany me for a walk outside, why is that stinky dog looking at me?” are often heard sounds from our resident royal Sparkle. If we don’t listen to her and supply the needed food or attention she moves onto slapping us and then onto catching us with claws.

I am pleased to say that Sparkle has given her approval to Hill’s special ceramic #FeedMeHillsMeow bowl and of course to the Hill’s Prescription Diet j/d food inside it. She in fact demanded a refill.

So to get on your cat’s good side (at least for a while) go and buy them Hill’s food and get a free ceramic bowl.

The #FeedMeHillsMeow practical and whisker-friendly ceramic bowl (worth R70) will be available from participating veterinary outlets from 1 June, while stocks last, on any purchase of Hill’s dry cat food (1.3kgs or larger), including Hill’s Science Plan, Hill’s Ideal Balance and Hill’s Prescription Diet).

Hill’s is South Africa’s most trusted brand of pet food and is naturally preserved, completely balanced and scientifically-formulated to meet your pet’s specific nutritional needs. Offer available while stocks last, terms and conditions do apply. For your nearest participating practice or vet shop contact Hill’s on infoza@hillspet.com or call 0800 228 783. Union Square Restaurant

Most people have a favourite restaurant and would go there every day if they could. Have you stopped to think why you enjoy certain restaurants?  What sets that restaurant apart from the others? Is it just the food or is it also the feeling you get when you are there?

I have been thinking of reasons why I return to a restaurant and these are the reasons that I have come up with :

Firstly and most importantly is of course the food. Exceptional flavours and good portions are key.
Good value and visual plate appeal also helps.
Next up is the ambience, music and comfortable chair.
Wait staff also play an important role. They must get your order correct! They must also be available when I need them but please don’t come and ask me how the meal is every 5 minutes.
Essentially I return to a restaurant the offers me fabulous food and a relaxed feel.

I recently met the owners of Union Square in Durban North and got to try out some of the food that they serve. They have an incredible passion for their brand and they endeavour to give their customers the freshest and best food. They spoke often about offering a “home replacement” meal that is good value for money. They believe in delivering a fresh product therefore their meat is delivered daily.

Burgers are the most consumed product in the world and Union Square have brought the “Smash Burger” concept to South Africa. A “Smash Burger” is 100% ground beef + fat + a little salt that is literally “smashed” together on the grill to make a beef patty. There are no additives and the pattys are never frozen. They are so passionate about their meals that they even have different bread rolls for their beef and chicken burgers. The bread rolls are even made by different bakers.

Had to have a cappuccino #lovecoffee

Banting Burger
I ordered the Banting Burger off their interactive menu and the beef patty was divine. In fact the Banting Burger itself was delicious with all its different flavours. I also got to taste a newly developed product  - Rum & Chilli Ribs. Wow! They were finger licking good! Union Square have an attention to detail with all their meals and they even pickle their own red onions that are served on the smash burgers.

Interactive Menu

Rum & Chilli Ribs
Keen to try a “Smash Burger”? Get to the restaurant at 59 Adelaide Tambo Drive in Durban North or their new restaurant situated at Oxford Village in Hillcrest.

They have a fabulous special, especially for the Moms with starving kids. Every Monday to Thursday from 2:30pm – 5pm you can get a chicken burger for just R20! If you want a beef burger it will cost you just R30. Please note that this is currently only available at the Durban North restaurant and is for eat-in only.

On Tuesday it is UNiDAY - especially for students. A classic beef or chicken burger and chips, plus a beer, soft drink or a glass of wine for just R49. Please note that a valid student card must be presented when ordering and the special is also eat-in and available from the Durban North store.

I think I need to add food passionate owners to my list of what I look for in a restaurant.

Darren Maule's Never Ending Comedy Tour

Keep an eye on the press for details.

Are you an aspiring comedian? Then why not make a 2 minute audio or video snippet of your jokes and send it to claire@claireclark.co.za for an open spot on Darren Maule's Never Ending Comedy Tour. Would you love to see a particular comedian on the tour in your town? Then you can also email your request.

The Never Ending Comedy Tour with Darren Maule features Darren Maule as MC together with a different line-up each month of 3 to 4 local and national comedians on stage for one night only in different venues around KZN. Dusty Rich, Magic Man, Carvin Goldstone and Martin Jonas have already taken to the stage on the tour.

"The idea is to take quality comedy to different venues all over KZN to people who want a good night out at a good price. Not everybody can, or wants to, travel far to see a show, but everybody does want a laugh and comedians love what they do - so we've put the two together!" says Maule.

Master Maths

Whether it’s a Government or Private school, you are paying a lot for your children’s education. It can be disheartening to find that your child needs extra lessons and many times the extra lessons offered at their school is not enough.

My daughter is currently in Grade 9 and does not have a love relationship with maths (neither do I!). Last year when she was in Grade 8 her maths teacher was not the best (I am being nice here) and she started to slip behind in understanding of some of the maths concepts (she was not the only one). She attended the extra lessons at the school (peer tutoring) but it did not help at all. We reached a stage of desperation where the threat of failing the year loomed ominously on the horizon. Something had to be done urgently and I spoke to a Mother whose child was taking extra maths outside the school. She told me about Master Maths in Kloof. After a few phone calls, emails and me driving to speak to them, she was booked in to study in term 4 of 2015.

She attended 2 lessons a week of 1 ½ hours each for most of term 4. She had her own computer to work on with a set of headphones so she was not disturbed with what was happening around her. A workbook and notebook was given and there was always a teacher available to ask questions of in case she got stuck. I had a happier child after only the first lesson and I am pleased to say that she passed maths brilliantly at the end of Grade 8 and was promoted to Grade 9.

We did not send her back to Master Maths in term 1 of this year and she did pass very well. Unfortunately she was very sick in term 1 and she missed two weeks of school. Therefore her maths mark was only taken from those tests that she had done before getting sick. She also had to catch up on the missed maths work once she returned to school. Since term 2 is an exam term we enrolled her again for Master Maths to make sure she knew all the work and would be totally ready to do her maths exams. This time she also goes twice a week but only for 1 hour per lesson.

I can really recommend Master Maths and especially the one here in Kloof. The owner and staff are all friendly and extremely helpful. They all want to make sure that your child succeeds at school.

Master Maths takes pupils from Grade 4 to Grade 12. If your Grade 10 to Grade 12 child needs extra lessons for physical science then you can also enrol them for Master Science. There are over 150 centres in Southern Africa so there should be one near you.

Letibalm Nose and Lip Repair Balm

Those that love the cold are looking forward to fireplace nights and warm, woolly jerseys. Except for the one thing that everyone hates; a sore nose and chapped lips. Whether from being sick or just from Winter, help is at hand with Letibalm.

Constant nose blowing and cold weather can result in the delicate skin between the nose and lips becoming dry, chapped and painful. Letibalm is the only balm on the market that has been specially designed to care for lips, nose and the skin in between.

This area needs special care because the lips and nose have thinner skin and less moisture glands which make it more vulnerable to the elements.

Letibalm is a gentle, restorative balm that moisturises dry skin, helps to repair chaps and cracks and calms irritation. It also creates a protective layer to prevent further damage.  Made with natural decongestants menthol and camphor, Letibalm will help ease breathing.

Letibalm Paediatric (suitable for children 0 to 8 years old) and regular Letibalm (10ml liquid tube or a 10ml jar) are available at a recommended retail price of R70 at Dis-Chem, selected Pick n Pay stores and leading pharmacies.

Letibalm Paediatric (10ml jar) for children 0 to 8 years old – RRP R70
Letibalm 10ml liquid tube or 10ml jar – RRP R70
Stockists: Dis-Chem, selected Pick n Pay stores and leading pharmacies.

Don’t let your nose or your families noses suffer this Winter. Treat them right with Letibalm nose and lip repair balm.
