Out the Box at Gateway

On Thursday 7 April I attended the Out the Box event at the Gateway Theatre of Shopping in Umhlanga.

Gateway Theatre of Shopping is the shopping centre to go to and it always seems to be busy. My kids love going there to movies, for shopping and to do what teenagers do best – wander around. I love going there for shops such as Rain, Typo and Lush and the all important cappuccino and something sweet to eat from So Whipped. One of my new places to eat is at Ebb & Flo cafe with their delicious banting burger.

This is the second Out the Box event that Gateway has held for the media and bloggers. Out the Box is a showcase of stores and brands within Gateway but held in a more intimate setting. The stores taking part are able to display their key pieces and what items are currently on trend in a large glass box on the upper level outside Cinema Nouveau.

The display will change every month so that the media and public can get a closer look at the shops within Gateway. In the first Out the Box 100% Co-Op, Lush, Klines and Beach and Beyond were featured. The food was supplied by Circus Circus and Cape Town Fish Market.

In this second edition of Out the Box the featured stores are Typo (scream!!), Forever New, Smashbox and Gopal’s Bags & Luggage. The food was supplied by Ebb & Flo cafe and we were served Chicken Mayo Toasted Wraps and Spinach & Ricotta Ravioli with Italian Prawn salad – divine!

Radio and television journalist Terence Pillay was the MC for the evening and he first spoke to the Marketing Manager of Gateway, Michelle Shelley. She explained to us the concept of having this Out the Box showcase and what Gateway wants to achieve by highlighting stores within the shopping centre.

Next up was Brendon from Ebb & Flo cafe who explained a bit about their menu and their delicious Harvest Table that is available every day. Dishes are created from food picked from a local farm that morning to keep everything as fresh as possible.

Devona from Smashbox said that this season’s makeup has a bold lip and warmer tones for eyes. She highly recommended their new Insta-Matte Lipstick Transformer which transforms any cream lipstick into a velvety matte finish. Also on her must try and buy list is their Photo Finish Foundation Primer - one of their best selling and award winning products. Smashbox at Gateway will help you try out products before you buy them and you will never go home not knowing how to use the product correctly. They want their customers to be well informed and happy.

Shenaaz from Forever New said that their beautiful warm coats do surprisingly sell in Durban and that the store has wonderful special offers. Women of all ages are sure to find something they love and are comfortable wearing.

Gopal’s Bags & Luggage is a family run store that started trading in the 1970’s. Amit Gopal said that luggage is becoming a very fashion orientated item with lots of different bright colours. When purchasing a set of luggage check with the staff in store for the set most suitable for you.

Last but certainly not least, Terence spoke to the Typo representative – Gift (such an apt name). I don’t know anyone who doesn’t LOVE Typo! With their quirky, fun, funny and awesome products there is always something you must buy. The currently trending items in Typo are their colouring books and Gift recommends that everyone buy a journal to write in and stimulate your thinking.

So the next time you are at Gateway take some time to look inside Out the Box at this month’s featured stores.
